Beyond the obvious sunburn symptoms of redness, blistering, and peeling—which we hope we’ve helped you learn to avoid with effective sun protection—the following can be indications that your skin has been exposed to the damaging effects of UV radiation: Dryness Thickened, leathery appearance (Remember that tanning is also a word for preparing shoe leather!) Mottled pigmentation (freckles, brown spots) Sallowness (yellowish or greenish appearance) Small broken blood vessels, known as telangiectasia Dark, rough precancerous lesions known as actinic keratoses Purple, bruise-like lesions, known as actinic purpura Wrinkles and sagging skin This last one may be a big surprise, but many of the skin changes we associate with aging are actually the result of photo-aging—long-term exposure to damaging UVA rays. Of course, it’s important to address sun damage not just for aesthetic reasons, but because cumulative sun damage can result in skin cancer. You should be alert to these signs of skin cancer, as summarized by the American Cancer Society: A skin growth that increases in size and appears pearly, translucent, tan, brown, black, or multicolored. A mole, birthmark, beauty mark, or any brown spot that changes color, increases in size or thickness, changes in texture, is irregular in outline, is bigger than 6mm or 1/4”(the size of a pencil eraser), or appears after age 21. A spot or sore that continues to itch, hurt, crust, scab, erode, or bleed. An open sore that does not heal within three weeks. If you have skin of color, you’ll need to check the less pigmented parts of your body—palms of hands, soles of feet, lips, nail beds—for unusual skin changes, which can sometimes go unnoticed. To exercise preventative care, do regular self-checks of your skin, and schedule an annual full-body skin check with us.
